BMW i3 Neue Klasse: Sustainability as a foundation, not just as an add‑on
The new BMW i3 built on the Neue Klasse platform shows how a comprehensive approach to sustainability in the automotive industry can look — from the supply chain through production to the end of the vehicle’s life.
CO₂ advantage over the combustion model already after 1–2 years of operation. Emissions in the supply chain reduced by one‑third thanks to renewable sources and recycled materials.
30 % secondary materials across the entire vehicle — aluminum chassis parts contain 80 % recycled content, wheels 70 %. Gen6 battery with recycled cobalt, lithium and nickel — 33 % lower emissions per Wh compared to the previous generation.
Front bumper: number of material types reduced from 15 to 7, share of recyclable plastics increased from 46 % to 85 %. Inside, seats made from textile produced from 100 % recycled PET.
Production starts in 2026 in Munich, and from 2027 the plant will switch entirely to electric production.
BMW aims to achieve net‑zero emissions by 2050 and cut CO₂ by 40 million tonnes by 2030 compared to 2019.
